Sergeant Richard Stewart

Richard Stewart was born at Tartlaghan, Dungannon, County Tyrone (probably 6 December 1877), one of thirteen children of farmer William Stewart and his wife Eliza (nee Dilworth).

He enlisted in the North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry on 28 October 1906 (No.616). On 6 July 1908 the regiment was disbanded and its successor, the North Irish Horse, was established. Stewart was one of those who joined the new regiment (No.88).

Stewart went to France on 1 May 1915 with D Squadron of the North Irish Horse.

On 1 October 1916 he transferred to the Military Mounted Police (No. P/4811).

He remained with the mounted police until 22 February 1919, when he was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
